Helping Students Find the Best Match and Fit

Getting students into college is only half the battle. We're often asked how to ensure students are persisting through college once they get in the door. Two important factors in college retention and success are match (whether the college's academic rigor aligns with a student's academic achievement) and fit (how a college aligns with a student's social, financial, and academic needs). Making sure students are correctly matched to the colleges they want to attend is crucial to their ultimate success. For example, low-income students often select colleges whose average GPA and ACT score are well under their academic capabilities; when this happens, these students are less likely to graduate despite being "overqualified." It is equally important to ensure students (especially at-risk students) are entering colleges at which they have a support system, including a community of like-minded students, majors and class sizes that fit their learning needs, and extra-curricular opportunities that keep them involved and engaged.

Thankfully, MCAN can point to our partners and statewide initiatives for a variety of best practices and high-quality resources that direct service providers can use to help their students navigate match and fit. For one, Michigan College Application Week allows for an entire week (or more) dedicated to helping students research and apply to college. Students can spend the weeks leading up to Michigan College Application Weekdiving into the ins and outs of different colleges using the resources discussed below. After they've done their research, why not have students apply to not one college, but three: a match school, a reach school, and a "safety" school that each meet the student's match and fit criteria?

Even though College Application Week has wrapped up for 2014, there are resources available year-round to help with this process. The Michigan College Access Portal is a free one-stop-shop for planning for college, and includes a college search feature to help students (starting as early as 7th grade) choose which schools best meet their needs based on several characteristics including Academics & Scores, Size & Environment, Sports & Activities, Cost of Attendance, and Majors. MichiganCAP also includes a Paying for College section that helps a student determine the anticipated costs associated with each college on their list. Similary, College Greenlight offers student reviews of colleges (like Yelp!), a match and fit meter, and customized college lists based on student profiles.

The Michigan Colleges Alliance just launched a new outreach campaign called We Are the Independents, dedicated to informing students of their options when it comes to Michigan's independent liberal arts colleges, many of which are great social and financial fits for students. This campaign is great because, like in our example above, many low-income or first-generation students tend to view these colleges as too elite or too expensive. Messaging such as that in their Fact or Fiction section aims to change these perceptions.

Additionally, MCAN works with partners like the Developmental Disabilities Institute at Wayne State University and Fostering Success Michigan to promote the available college access resources for students with disabilities and students in foster care.

School District Embraces a College-Going Culture

District Spotlight: West Ottawa Public Schools

Most of our Spotlights take a close look at a Local College Access Network, but this week we're shining the light on a school district: West Ottawa Public Schools. Their talented staff embraces a college-going culture and regularly takes MCAN initiatives and opportunities to a new level for the betterment of their students and the community.

From College Application Week to College Decision Day. From investment in postsecondary planning training and hiring a college advisor to utilization of the online transcript process. West Ottawa has streamlined their college-going process through a dedicated, all-hands-on-deck approach.

How has this level of engagement been possible? Everyone, from the district superintendent to the building level staff, believes in the district-wide mission of preparing all students to be college, career and life ready. The district is also deliberate in defining the term "college" so students from early on understand it's more than a bachelor's degree. Everything West Ottawa does is connected to their mission.

"Receiving the postsecondary planning training was essential, " said Tania Dozeman, West Ottawa High School counselor. Five counselors from West Ottawa Public Schools completed MCAN's Postsecondary Planning Training Course in June 2014. "It's common for a counselor to learn about college advising in the trenches once they've landed a job since job duties and traditional training don't match up. Gaining this knowledge has helped with the excitement of counseling staff." In addition to providing postsecondary planning training opportunities for current counselors, West Ottawa has invested in hosting a College Advising Corps member since 2011.

What has this focus and engagement done for counselors? It means counselors and the college adviser are spending less time on instruction for the steps to college with students and parents and more time exploring the best match and fit because students are hearing the message sooner and from more individuals than their counselor. Teachers, coaches, office staff are all talking about college. Students know what is expected of them and they understand the college-going language.

"Students are coming to us willingly with more, well-defined questions about the college-going process," said Mitch Veldkamp, West Ottawa High School counselor. "Before there was more pulling and proding from the counselors."

This year, 90% of seniors completed an application by end conclusion of Michigan's College Application Week. It was an easy accomplishment because their seniors were ready and knew what was expected from them after watching three previous senior classes participate. College Application Week has grown so much and is embraced by all that their middle school participated for the first time this year.

"Initiatives like College Application Week and College Decision Day are fun culture-building programs that all high schools should participate in," said Todd Tulgestke, West Ottawa principal. "However, if it's not important to your building leadership, it will be really hard to pull off. Everyone needs to be committed to creating a college-going culture."

Improving College and Career Readiness Training for School Counselors

At MCAN, we believe that school counselors are well poised to lead the charge in ensuring students are socially, academically, logistically and financially prepared for postsecondary education. School counselors are uniquely positioned to change the postsecondary education trajectories for all students. In order for counselors to effectively lead the college access movement in their buildings, however, they must have the (1) capacity, (2) administrative support, and (3) formal preparation in college counseling. While MCAN is actively working on #1 and #2 (stay tune for some pretty exciting developments coming this February!), we have rolled up our sleeves and got to work on #3 by ensuring school counselors get the training they need to be effective postsecondary educational planners.

We know we can do better in Michigan – we heard that loud and clear from this 2011 survey of Michigan school counselors. We recently launched two strategies to support both in-service and pre-service school counselors. First, we created the School Counselor Postsecondary Education Planning Training Course in partnership with Michigan Association for College Admissions Counseling, Michigan Association of Collegiate Registrars & Admissions Officers, Michigan Student Financial Aid Association, Michigan Student Financial Services Bureau, Michigan School Counselor Association, Michigan Department of Education, Southern Regional Education Board, and Michigan Virtual University. In response to counselor feedback from the 2011 and 2012 National Survey of School Counselors published by the National Office for School Counselor Advocacy, we designed an innovative hybrid eight-month course teaching school counselors strategies to help students navigate the college-going process, including intensive training on college admissions and affordability. Exactly 81 school counselors completed the course in June 2014.

Here's just as sampling of the feedback we've received from graduates of the course:

"I truly enjoyed the course and would highly recommend it to others"

"This course if full of great resources. Along with the resources were great ideas for implementing them, in addition to hearing how they were being implemented by others."

"This course required me to think about how we were doing things and then utilize the resources to plan for a better way to build our counseling program. It left me with specific goals and timelines for implementing."

Our school counselors are beginning to demand this type of information and training. The inaugural run of the training has proven to be a successful tool for reaching current school counselors with the information; a second cohort kicked off in September of this year. The demand for the course was so great (the first 100 slots filled in 26 hours), we expanded the capacity of the course to include a total of 150 participants – and still have a waiting list (see interactive map here). The current course kicked off on September, 29th with a jam-packed day-long meeting.

Here is what a few counselors had to say about the course kick-off:

"Thank you for showing respect for school counselors by providing us the opportunity to network and obtain pertinent information to share with students and staff."

"Good networking stuff. At the tail-end of my career, I wish I could have had this opportunity years ago."

"I am actually looking forward to the homework! It's been a long time since I said that. Please thank the folks that fund this. I am so excited to have this great opportunity. It was great and I felt valued and pampered all at the same time! Thanks again."

In addition to the postsecondary planning training course for practicing school counselors, MCAN also provided grants (and loads of positive encouragement) to Wayne State University, Western Michigan University and Grand Valley State University to reform their School Counseling Graduate Programs. We're thrilled to share that Western and Wayne kicked off their new courses this fall and GVSU incorporated some new content into their existing curriculum.

Because of our bold actions, Michigan has been recognized as paving the way nationally in the effort to train school counselors. In July, Brandy was invited to join "The White House Opportunity Agenda," a task force led by President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama that focused on the vital role of school counselors in impacting students' college and career readiness. Brandy also spoke at the White House's higher education summit in July. In November, a team comprised of MCAN staff and Michigan leaders in counselor training and education traveled to San Diego State University to focus on creating and implementing measurable action plans for improving school counseling preparation, programs, and practices with the goal of increasing college access for all students.

Giving Thanks

The holiday season is officially upon us. November – and Thanksgiving in particular – is a time that reminds us what we're thankful for. I thought I would take advantage of our new blog to share just what I'm thankful for at MCAN. Lisa King, our blog editor, tells me there's a word count limit so I'll have to pick just a few of the things that bring me excitement and joy every day as the Executive Director of MCAN. Are you ready? In no particular order, I am thankful for...

SunDevil1. Being a Sun Devil – I'm thankful for my experience as a first-generation college student at Arizona State University. Not only did it change the educational path for my younger siblings, but also it led me to the amazing career I have today. #forkem

2. Local College Access Networks – Our LCANs are the driving force behind our efforts to reach Goal 2025. The LCANs engage local leaders and are shifting the college-going culture in communities across the state.

3. The "Cloud" – While you may find this amusing and I've had my fair share of battles with Google Calendar, I do have to be thankful for technology that allows me and my staff stay connected and engaged while traveling the state of Michigan and the country.

4. MCAN Board of Directors – They are a constant source of guidance and support for me. Although I may be a relatively young executive director, the MCAN Board provides the necessary encouragement to be bold when we should and have shaped me into the leader I am today. They continue to push me to be better all in pursuit of expanding opportunities to Michigan's young people.

5. Cupcakes, specifically Whipped Bakery in Lansing – sampling cupcakes is an all-time favorite activity at the MCAN office and there's nothing like a lemon meringue or red velvet cupcake to get the creative juices flowing at MCAN. Stop by our office during a staff meeting and there's sure to be sugary snacks on the table – that's a promise.

Wedding MCANstaff6. MCAN Staff – Where would I be without our fearless staff? Probably stuck in an airport, phoneless, with a diet coke in hand. But seriously, they are my lifeblood. It's hard to believe MCAN is nearing its fifth birthday. When I look back at all we've accomplished, I know I have my amazing staff to thank for taking our ideas and turning them into a reality. Their passion motivates me and excites me to think just how the college access landscape will look in another five years.
