Join other college access professionals, practitioners and community organizers to explore opportunities to improve college access in your community.  This year's theme, Measuring What Matters, will focus on the importance of key metrics for our state and how Local College Access Networks can utilize these metrics to advance community priorities.

Breakout Sessions - Call for Presenters!

We invite you to submit a breakout session proposal for the 2012 MCAN Conference. The review committee is interested in presentations that will be interactive and of interest to the greatest number of participants relating to this year's conference theme, Measuring What Matters. Sessions offered at the Michigan College Access Network Conference should be applicable to the intended audience of practitioners, community organizers, and college access leaders. Topic suggestions include:

  • Best Practices for Collecting and Utilizing Data
  • Engaging Target Populations including low-income students, first-generation students, students of color, veterans, students with disabilities, and adult learners.
  • Early Intervention to Build a College-Going Culture
  • Financial Aid
  • Policy and Advocacy Efforts
  • Using Data to State Your Case

Early Registration - $50 before March 30
Regular Registration - $65  after March 30. Regular registration deadline is April 16, 2012.

Cancellation Policy: Any requests for a refund will be subject to a $20 administrative fee. Registration fees are not refundable after April 16, 2012.

Conference Room Rate: $94 per night plus applicable taxes. Ask for the Michigan College Access Network Conference rate when making your reservations. The group room block will be released on March 30, 2012.

Parking is available in the parking structure attached to the Kellogg Center. If you are staying overnight at the Kellogg Center, you will be given a pass for free parking. All other conference participants should come prepared to pay as they exit.

Keynote Speaker: Dean Donald Heller

Donald E. Heller is dean of the College of Education at Michigan State University and a professor of higher, adult, and lifelong education. Prior to his appointment in January 2012, he was director of the Center for the Study of Higher Education and professor of education and senior scientist at The Pennsylvania State University. He also held a faculty appointment at the University of Michigan. His teaching and research is in the areas of educational economics, public policy, and finance, with a primary focus on issues of college access and choice for low-income and minority students. He has consulted on higher education policy issues with university systems and policymaking organizations in California, Colorado, Kansas, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Hampshire, Tennessee, Washington, Washington DC, and West Virginia, and has testified in front of Congressional committees, state legislatures, and in federal court cases as an expert witness. Before his academic career, he spent a decade as an information technology manager at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Dean Heller will speak to conference participants during the luncheon plenary.  After his presentation, we will open the discussion for question and answer.
