Achieving the Dream: Community College Count - Michigan Community College Association is a multi-year national initiative to improve student success at community colleges. Seventeen of Michigan’s twenty-eight community colleges participate in the Achieving the Dream Initiative.

College Goal Sunday- EduGuide

Hundreds of volunteers will help college-bound Michigan students and their families complete the FAFSA during statewide College Goal Sunday events held on Sunday, February 12, 2012 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Financial aid experts will be available at dozens of sites across Michigan to guide students and their parents through each step of completing and filing the FAFSA.

KING*CHAVEZ*PARKS INITIATIVE Michigan Economic Development Corporation- Workforce Development Agency
The goal of the KCP Initiative is to increase the number of Michigan's most educationally disadvantaged citizens who have the opportunity to complete college degrees and experience career success. KCP consists of six unique programs designed to assist students along the academic pipeline from 7th grade through graduate school. A key component of the Initiative is the GEARUP/College Day Program which partners with Michigan’s public universities to provide early intervention services and a scholarship component for low-income students.

College Positive Volunteerism and College Coaching Corps

Michigan Campus Compact assists with connecting higher education institutions and LCANs, in an effort to increase the number of college students developed and trained to serve as College Positive Volunteers (CPVs) in local communities. These CPVs will serve as college access promoters, mentors, and supporters for underrepresented K-12 students.
The Mentor Michigan College Coaching Corps is a joint effort between Michigan Campus Compact and Mentor Michigan. The MMCCC will place AmeriCorps members within youth mentoring organizations or institutions of higher education. The goal of this program is to increase the number of youth served through mentoring relationships and to develop “college-going” cultures within local communities.

Michigan College Advising Corps

Center for Educational Outreach, Univ. of Michigan
The University of Michigan and Michigan State University recruit and train a diverse group of recent U-M and MSU college graduates to work full-time as college advisers in underserved high schools throughout Michigan for one-two years. These advisers assist high school students in navigating every aspect of the college selection and enrollment process. They will work with school staff and their LCANs to foster a college-going culture within their schools and communities.

For the 2011-2012 school year, the Michigan College Advising Corps and the Michigan State College Advising Corps will support a total of 32 recent college graduates throughout Michigan communities.
MDE College Access & Outreach Unit
The College Access and Outreach (CAO) unit in the Michigan Department of Education is responsible for providing information and carrying out targeted initiatives about access to higher education, with special initiatives made to reach low-income and first generation (in postsecondary education) middle and high school students. The CAO administers the College Access Challenge Grant sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education. This grant fosters partnerships with federal, state, and local government agencies, and philanthropic organizations that are aimed at increasing the number of low-income and first generation students who are prepared to enter and succeed in postsecondary education.

Michigan Department of Human Services- Education Planners
Michigan DHS has hired 16 education planners to work with youth in foster care, age 14 and older. The education planners serve 32 counties providing one-on-one assistance to youth in foster care and acting as a liaison between the child welfare system and the education system. Education planners are trained as experts in college preparation and financial aid for youth transitioning out of the foster care system.

Promise Zones

PROMISE ZONES, Public Policy Associates. In 2009, ten communities in Michigan were designated as “Promise Zones.” These communities will create and implement a universal college scholarship program for all students living and graduating high school within the geographic boundaries of the Zone.

Wayne State Developmental Disabilities Institute
DDI aims to contribute to the development of inclusive communities and quality of life for people with disabilities and their families through a culturally sensitive statewide program of interdisciplinary education, community support and services, research and dissemination of information. DDI and MCAN will encourage local communities to work together to discuss and identify opportunities for cooperative work and mutually beneficial projects. http://ddi.wayne.edu

Western Michigan University Fostering Success Initiative
Western Michigan University-Kresge Fostering Success Initiative is building a Michigan-wide collective-impact strategy to prepare youth in foster care for college by increasing awareness of, access to and success with college preparation. The goal is to increase college-going rates and successful career transitions among Michigan’s foster-youth population.
