Diversity and Equity Focus

on 16 June 2011.

MCAN is excited to announce the launching of the Diversity and Equity Focus for its college access work.   As a leader in college access efforts across the country, MCAN recognizes the need to take that next step and adopt a diversity lens as it works to increase post secondary attainment across the state.  In doing so, it will be one of the first states to formalize its commitment to diversity and equity and bring laser focus to its efforts to increase post secondary attainment for students of color and other underrepresented students.  MCAN’s diversity and equity initiative will involve infusing and imbedding a diversity and equity perspective into its work by recognizing where attainment gaps exist and developing targeted strategies across the network to insure these gaps are addressed through not only heightened awareness but network wide commitment, overall strategic planning, allocation of resources, and data collection and evaluation.

At the MCAN conference in April, many individuals shared their thoughts and ideas regarding inclusion in college access initiatives in a workshop entitled Diversity Focused Access and Success Strategies.  The discussion in this workshop has resulted in the creation of a short term Ad Hoc Committee on Equity Strategies. This committee is made up of volunteers from the workshop and others and will provide MCAN with insight and feedback around current and future post secondary attainment strategies and equity issues across the state.  Under the leadership of  MCAN’s Director Brandy Johnson,  MCAN consultants Dr. Nanette Reynolds, Liliana Stoneback and MCAN Executive Assistant Sarah Anthony will also be working with a small group of LCAN’s to pilot its Diversity and Equity Focus in the local college access network.  Through this pilot project, MCAN will develop specific strategies to laser focus its efforts on closing the attainment gaps among students of color and other underrepresented students across the state.
