Presentations from RFP grantee session

Many community-based programs are at work today, improving college access by preparing families, providing resources and encouraging students to pursuing higher education. Build on success when you incorporate these great resources into your own local college access program…

KnowHow2GO is a tested and celebrated awareness campaign that encourages low-income students in grades eight to ten and their families to take the necessary steps toward college. The campaign’s public service announcements urge young people to find someone who can help them get to college and direct students and their mentors to a website and other resources. It also networks educational institutions, youth organizations and community groups that offer support for students. KnowHow2GO is funded by Lumina Foundation.

Achieving the Dream is a multiyear national initiative to help more community college students succeed. The initiative is particularly concerned about student groups, including students of color and low-income students, that historically have faced significant barriers to success.

College Goal Sunday prepares students and parents to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

National College Access Network brings together college access and success practitioners, researchers, policymakers, and others interest in increasing access to and success in post-secondary education for under-represented students.

Michigan College Advising Corps is a nationwide consortium of colleges and universities that places recent graduates of partner institutions as college advisers in low-income high schools and community colleges. Corps programs work in communities across the country to provide the advising and encouragement that students need to navigate college admissions. In partnership with MCAN, the National College Advising Corps will expand into Michigan.

KCP Initiative The goal of the King•Chavez•Parks (KCP) Initiative is to increase the number of Michigan’s most educationally disadvantaged citizens who have the opportunity to complete college degrees and experience career success as active participants in a knowledge-based global society and economy.

Michigan Department of Treasury Student Financial Services Bureau:  The mission of the Student Financial Services Bureau is to excel in assisting citizens to pursue postsecondary education by providing equality of access to student financial resources and information.

The Imagine Fund:  The Imagine Fund exists to ensure access and expand equal opportunity to higher education for all students.

Example Programs

Here are just a few Michigan examples of community-based college access programs in action:

Muskegon Opportunity seeks to build a culture of learning in Muskegon County, prepare students for postsecondary education or formal training, provide extra assistance for students most at risk of not completing high school or proceeding into postsecondary study, and provide financial assistance for a two-year degree or program at selected institutions.

The SCC Plan (St. Clair County) creates a K-16 pipeline in St. Clair County in cooperation with a broad coalition of organizations. The Plan is a coordinated effort to increase the number of students graduating from high school and pursuing at least an associate’s degree. The SCC Plan strives to uncover existing financial aid and resources, change St. Clair County’s value and appreciation for a college degree, and explore the possibility of creating a “Promise” program.

In addition, Promise Zones—designated by the State of Michigan—bring education and community leaders together to raise funds and administer a universal last-dollar scholarship program in Baldwin, Battle Creek, Benton Harbor, Detroit Hazel Park, Jackson, Lansing, Muskegon, Pontiac and Saginaw.
