October is Michigan College Month: Plan, Apply, Pay!
Big changes are coming to the FAFSA in 2016: The FAFSA form will now use prior-prior tax year information, and will be available on October 1 rather than January 1. The FAFSA will be easier to file than ever before, and MCAN has made some changes to our College Application Week and College Cash Campaign initiatives to reflect these changes. We’re declaring October Michigan College Month, where high schools can host college application and FAFSA/financial aid drives concurrently, with the goal that by the conclusion of October, every graduating senior has filed their FAFSA, applied to at least one college, and applied for at least one scholarship.
High schools will have the opportunity to sign up for Michigan College Month or for our traditional College Application Week and College Cash Campaign initiatives.

The American College Application Campaign, launched by the American Council on Education (ACE), is a national effort to increase the number of first-generation and low-income students who pursue a postsecondary education. The purpose is to help high school seniors navigate the college admissions process and ensure that each participating student submits at least one admissions application. Special focus is placed on assisting students who would be the first in their families to attend college and students who may not have otherwise seriously considered applying to college.
The Campaign is conducted state by state. However, there may be variations of the scheduled week in order to accommodate the individual needs of a state. While activities may vary from state to state, everyone is striving toward the common goal of providing every graduating seniors an opportunity to apply to college. The American College Application Campaign can open the door for students by encouraging them to take a significant step toward college in their senior year.
Michigan's College Application Week is one initiative in a suite of three, that aim to support students throughout the entire college-going process during their senior year. It is followed by the College Cash Campaign and College Decision Day.
Inspired by the national concept, the purpose of Michigan College Application Week is to target low-income students, first-generation college going students, and those who would have not otherwise considered college. Our goal is to help all graduating high school seniors navigate the complex college admissions process and provide the opportunity to complete at least one application by the conclusion of Michigan College Application Week at host high schools. Every year, we produce a final report outlining our College Application Week efforts and success. It is available for download below.
