What We Do
Coordination
MCAN coordinates Michigan college access resources, programs and services. We identify areas of gap and duplication and provide a forum for college access professionals to share best practices.
Leadership and Advocacy
MCAN serves as Michigan's authority on college access and success issues through leadership. We advocate for policy reforms that expand college access and success for low-income students, first-generation students, and students of color.
Professional Development
MCAN trains college access professionals such as high school counselors and other community-based/campus-based professionals, to be highly qualified and effective college advisers.
LCAN Development
MCAN supports the creation, expansion, and sustainability of high-quality, community-based college access strategies, known as Local College Access Networks(LCAN). MCAN serves as the primary support organization to LCANs by providing technical assistance and grant opportunities.
Implement Statewide Initiatives
In partnership with the Michigan Department of Education College Access & Outreach Unit, MCAN co-implements two statewide college access strategies.
-
Michigan College Access Portal (MichiganCAP) - A one-stop-shop web portal for students to plan, apply, and pay for college.
-
KnowHow2GOMichigan - A public awareness campaign encouraging young people to take the necessary steps to go to college.
-
ItsMILife.com - A social networking site that engages students directly in planning for life after high school. Students can connect, contribute and make college decisions. They are encouraged to ask questions about life after high school, and connect with other high school students, current college students and mentors.
Strengthen Partner Initiatives
MCAN strengthens existing like-minded and mission-aligned college access and success initiatives.
